How to calculate the volumetric weight

The volumetric weight corresponds to the space occupied by the parcel in relation to its actual weight. This means, for example, that a 10 kg package carrying straw or other kind of bulky merchandise will certainly have a larger volume than a shipment of equal weight and containing paper for copying, iron or other high mass materials. Conversely, 1 cubic metre of books will have a weight significantly greater than 1 cubic metre of plastic container.
In both cases, the price of the shipment will be determined by assuming as "taxable value" the highest value between the actual weight and the volumetric weight.
The formula for calculating the volumetric weight of a package is given by the product between the 3 dimensions of the parcel, expressed in centimetres, divided by a fixed number according to the following list:
  • National Shipment: Fixed 4000
  • International Road Transport: Fixed 4000
  • International Air Transport: Fixed 5000
  • Express International Shipping: Fixed 5000
For example, consider a direct London package weighing 20 kg and measuring 50 cm (length) x 60 (width) x 60 (height): we multiply 50 x 60 x 60, we get 180,000 cubic centimetres, we then divide this by 6,000 (in case of express international shipping) and we get 30 (taxable weight in kg).
